Photo by jasperdoest / A newborn ringed seal pup out on the ice in Svalbard. The life of these seals mainly revolves around sea ice. Their pups spend their first weeks in snow dens on the ice, which the parents build for protection against predation and freezing. Decreasing amounts of snowfall, prolonged midwinter thawing periods, and early spring arrival makes it impossible for adult seals to build snow dens, leaving pups without their protective shelters. As ringed seals only have one pup per year, this makes them vulnerable to environmental changes.
