Photo by kiliiiyuyan / Ears of heritage corn display a rainbow of colors at the Onondaga Nation Farm in upstate New York. Onondaga tribal member Angela Ferguson manages a massive seed library of thousands of varieties of Indigenous corn found nowhere else. They are the genetic memory of generations of ancestors across the Americas. Today, most of the world’s calories come from just five crops, including corn, and resilience to climate change and pests is heavily bolstered by Indigenous heritage varieties. For the Onondaga, nutritious varieties of corn are security during uncertain times—such as the COVID pandemic—because they have grown and set aside years' worth of food for their members.

We owe a debt of gratitude to Indigenous peoples for their continuing stewardship of staples, from potatoes to beans. During Native American Heritage Month, we can pay our respects by becoming more aware of the modern Indigenous peoples in a single, simple way—by getting to know someone Native in your own community.
