## Caption

Photo by sarahyltonphoto / Angeline Cheek, an environmental activist and member of the Fort Peck Indian Reservation in Montana, stands beside the Missouri River. Cheek has been active in opposing the proposed Keystone XL pipeline, a controversial extraction project that President Trump reintroduced in 2017 and that President-elect Biden has promised to shut down. The proposed pipeline would cross through the Missouri River just south of the reservation: “This is our medicine,” she said, referring to the plants and herbs used by Native American communities for medicinal and ceremonial purposes—and which she fears could be contaminated by a pipeline spill.
