## Caption

50 years of our changing planet through the eyes of Landsat! 🌎

Since 1972, USGS & NASA have worked together on an unprecedented and nearly continuous visual record of Earth’s landscapes, icescapes and coastal ecosystems.

Landsat spacecraft sense light outside the visible range, so these images show more than what eyes can see. One could even call them works of art.

To celebrate 50 years of partnership, we’re sharing our top 10 “Earth as Art” images from the more than 10 million we’ve collected. Happy #Landsaturday!

1. Dardzha Peninsula: Winds whip orange dunes near the cobalt waters of Turkmenistan. Shallow coastal terraces look like a monstrous ogre with something gooey in its mouth.
2. Icy Vortex: Swirling turquoise ice floats in the blue Foxe Basin of northern Canada.
3. Meandering Mississippi: Blocky towns, fields and pastures surround graceful teal whorls of the Mississippi south of Memphis.
4. Icelandic Outburst: Vertical red and black streaks mar an icy landscape. Gray-black filaments are past glacial melting outbursts. Red indicates moss, birch shrub, and other grasses.
5. Van Gogh from Space: Blooms of greenish phytoplankton swirl in dark water around Gotland, a Swedish island in the Baltic Sea. Phytoplankton are microscopic marine plants whose population explodes when deep currents bring nutrients to sunlit surface waters.
6. Jebel Kissu, in northwestern Sudan, emerges like a gray and orange island in a vast blue desert. Bright lines are truck tracks, common in the Sahara where there are no paved roads.
7. In the green coast of Rupert Bay, Canada, tan sediment churns as the river meets the sea.
8. Icelandic Tiger: This coast resembles a tiger's head with stripes of orange, black and white. The “mouth” is the great Eyjafjorour, a deep fjord.
9. Oxbows in Bolivia: The Beni River resembles a blue ribbon as it snakes toward the Amazon River. Dark greens indicate forest and lighter greens, grassland.
10.The Dofar: Much of Oman is desert, but this region catches drenching rains on a mountainous ridge that separates the lush, green coastal areas from the arid purple interior.
