Wilkinson, already an accomplished author, approached her publisher in 1971 with the idea to write a book about a racing driver — she chose Morton as the subject, and The Stainless Steel Carrot was born. Wilkinson later became a motorsports correspondent for autoweekusa and authored dozens of both fiction and nonfiction books.

Morton dreamed of becoming a world champion driver since childhood, and moved across the country to attend Carroll Shelby’s racing school. There he met Pete Brock and became the star driver for Brock’s BRE race team in a variety of Datsuns. He would go on to become one of the premier sports car racers of the ‘70s and ‘80s.
