The Kofan people of the Ecuadorian Amazon won a landmark legal battle yesterday to protect one of the most biodiverse headwater regions of the Amazon basin, nullifying 52 gold mining concessions and stopping a gold rush that threatened more than 60,000 acres of primary rainforest in their ancestral lands.
