Suicide is preventable, and one way to prevent suicide is by reducing access to lethal means. Lethal means is commonly firearms, medication bottles, sharp blood objects such as knives, or other objects identified in an individual’s suicide plan/ideation. If we know an individual is suicidal we could make sure these lethal means are not accessible to help save a life. ⠀

Furthermore, we are now realizing it is important to be mindful of lethal means when an individual is suicidal AND when an individual within a home or living situation is AT RISK for suicide but may not have an expressed plan. ⠀

Why? Well, statistics show about 50% of suicides occur within 0-10 minutes from the thought. It’s often impulsive. Which is exactly why we need to make sure our firearms are properly stored, locked, and other items such as medication bottles or knives are locked and secured too. It may seem harsh to some, but really it’s all done to help protect an individual from self harm and to save a life. 🤍⠀
