Today is #WorldSuicidePreventionDay. All over the country and the globe, we reflect on what can be done to save our next generations from something so preventable: suicide.

Did you know suicide rates are up approx. 30% nationally since 1999? And that those rates are up even higher for certain populations? Such as for Native American/American Indian (NA/AI) populations.

Why do some populations have a greater risk of suicide??? Although this a complex question requiring a dynamic answer, based on data we know the following are at greater risk of suicide:
▫️those with a mental health condition
▫️those under extreme or prolonged stress
▫️those that have endured a traumatic event
▫️those that live with historical trauma 
▫️those with family dysfunction
▫️those with substance use disorders
▫️those with previous suicide attempts

Knowing which populations are at greater risk of suicide helps us at Lost&Found, prevention organizations, and communities to understand how to keep rates from increasing. Focusing on suicide prevention for specific populations is imperative as cultures and groups of people experience life differently.
