Steam roller, or Road Roller? 

The first alternative power rollers were used in the 1860s, relying on steam engines, which is where the common name “steam roller” comes from. Today, rollers use combustion engines which allow for much heavier drums creating a more even compaction of the road surface. In some parts of the world, steam rollers were in use up until the 1970’s!

Road Rollers make for easy work of rough surfaces such as asphalt, concrete, and soil.
