Today we start the Themis A to Z of Apprenticeships

A – Apprenticeships

An Apprenticeship is a paid job at a company where the employee is also learning and gaining experience toward a qualification.

Breaking it down further it means usually you will spend around 80% of your working week on the job – be it on a factory floor, in an office, in a school or wherever your chosen career takes you.

The other approximately 20% of your time will be spent in a classroom or workshop-style learning situation, for example in the Centre of Manufacturing and Engineering Excellence at Themis at Burnley College’s £100 million Princess Way Campus.

There are lots of advantages in taking an Apprenticeship over more “traditional“ study. Firstly, you will be earning money. Your exact wage will depend on various factors including your age and your employers, but you will be able to walk away from your studies having not run up a debt.

Secondly, for many people they find learning “on-the-job” is the best way for them. You get to work alongside people from the industry you’ve chosen and pick up their skills, techniques and tips as well as being able to ask for advice and get guidance from people who actually live the career you want.

Finally, you get a qualification. Experience is always essential when you go for a job, but to have a piece of paper which confirms your skills to potential new employers is invaluable. #YOTA2022
