The 120+kg class will end off Classic Nationals with a clash of titans between a legendary competitor and an upcoming phenom in the division. Here are the best recent totals of the top nominees:

Ray Williams 1010kg (2,226lbs)
Pablo Olivares 925kg (2,039lbs)
Enrique Lugo 920kg (2,028lbs)
Tristan Nazelrod 913kg (2,012lbs)

First up, we are anticipating a strong rematch between Nazelrod and Lugo. They have already faced each other twice at previous Nationals. Lugo was crowned the national champion in the 120kg division in 2022 and went on to place silver at the World Championships. Nazelrod returned in 2023 for revenge and stole the title from Lugo, going on to win the NAPF North American Championships. Now, both lifters are electing to move up to the 120+kg class and battle it out once again.

Olivares is coming in looking to contend against an all-time great in Williams. Olivares placed silver at the inaugural PA Nationals against his own brother, Jesus Olivares. He went on to become the junior national champion in the same year. This performance will continue the campaign that Olivares has set to one day go head-to-head against his brother in a colossal battle.

Williams sits at the top of the nominations as the reigning national champion attempting to defend his title. He is a seasoned veteran in the game, having won five world championships in his legendary career. He will not need to hit his best numbers to beat Olivares, but he must be on pace with his recent performances to combat Olivares’s fast progression. We could also see him cross the esteemed 1,000lbs mark in the squat, which he has not done since 2021.

Jesus Olivares is missing from this battle as he recently put up a 1,113kg total at the Sheffield Championships. The highest total between Sheffield and Nationals receives the ticket to Worlds, meaning that a lifter will need to exceed Olivares’s total to earn that spot.

Who will walk away with the crown? Has Olivares progressed enough to challenge Williams? Tune in on Saturday, March 16 on the sbdapparel YouTube page to find out.
