“one last dance”

The abcnoriopunkhc collective has held #allages #DIY #punk #hardcore shows at 156 Rivington St in the #LES for over 20 years. Saturday, 6/25/16 marked the last of these staple #saturdaymatinee shows to be held in the current building. Starting off as a squat in the early 1980’s and through much hard work and dedication, abcnorio has not only managed over the years to buy their dilapidated tenement building from the city, but to begin the long awaited “renovation”. In reality, the renovation is more like a complete demolition. From the ashes of the current building will rise a new, state of the art, LEED certified building, owned and operated by the volunteers of the many collectives that make up #abcnorio. While the building will no doubt be gleaming and new, like much of the new construction in the Lower East Side, I am sure that the spirit of the sweaty basement shows where you always half worried about the floor collapsing or the ceiling caving in will always remain.
As for me personally, it is bittersweet. No physical space has had so much impact on me as ABC No Rio. I remember traveling there from DC in the late 90’s to go to punk, hardcore, and screamo shows, first in the basement and then in the gallery space. It is where my love for photographing music and people was born. When I lived in NYC in the first half of the 2000’s it was my second home. Between the various aspects of the building I was involved in I think I spent more time there than anywhere I actually lived. I did not make any friends there, I gained another family.

After being away from the building for most of the last decade aside from short visits here and there, I knew that I had to make it up to NYC for the last show. not only to document it, but to say goodbye. Now, a few days later, at home and back in the middle of a life very different from what it was a decade ago, and as I look through the pictures from the show, I think this is one sums up a lot of things i cant put in to words. robertraymer.com/abcnorio
