We’ve replaced our fence three times since we moved in. Each time we did it ourselves because “right now, we don’t have the budget for it and it’s going to be expensive”.

We live in a windy coastal garden where the North wind likes to batter the life out of our fence so we’ve had no choice but to repair it multiple times and replace panels.

Do you know how much we’ve now spent on uprights and fence panels? Yep, thats right! Far more than we would have if we’d just done it properly and used a professional in the first place.

Is there a moral here? Um, yes. Had we looked at the long term, the fact that the storms and our particularly windy garden was going to necessitate a lot of fence upkeep, we’d probably have invested in a more stable and robust fence earlier even though at the time we felt it stretched our budget. But we didn’t. So now we’ve finally got a fence company in. It’s still stretched the budget but at least we know we’ll not have to pay out again and again in the long run. And we are so relieved to have a proper, great looking and sturdy fence in place.

Sometimes it’s fine to struggle on and “do it yourself” but if your skills (or lack thereof) mean you’re going to end up with more hassle, spend more money in the long run and lose out on returns, then it’s always better to get in someone who knows what they’re doing. Just saying!
