## Caption

Today we remember all those who have given their lives for the peace and freedom we enjoy today. 

This painting of my paternal grandfather - my "Morfar" - used to sit in my grandparent's house above their mantelpiece and used to scare me stupid! The eyes used to follow me everywhere. I never realised until I was older that it was actually my grandfather because by then he was bald, wore glasses and constantly had a cheeky smile. During WWII he served abroad on the anti-aircraft guns and my Mum (born in "41)  was nearly three when she first met him properly.  I know how lucky I was that he came back and I was able to grow up knowing him and for that, I'm ever grateful. He was a big influence on my life and I still miss him dearly. 

I'm currently following in my Mum's footsteps and continuing her work on our family tree. She's gone now and I'm kicking myself that I didn't get more involved in it when she was alive. So many questions! Her grandfather, also Peter Bruschan, was from Latvia and we've got nothing to go on to find out any more information. His story was that during WWI he was called back to Russia to fight for the Russian army and when the war finished my Great Grandmother had no idea whether he was alive or dead. It took him a good year or so to work his way back across Europe (he was a tailor) to get back to her in London where he unexpectedly turned up one day! 

So I'll be wearing my poppy with pride today, remembering the sacrifices that were made for us and feeling gratitude as I watch our little parade here in Leigh-On-Sea.
