When the bicycle was first introduced there was absolute panic and moral outrage at the dangers that these contraptions could unleash. One of the warnings being about "bicycle face"!!⁠⁠

While you're not likely to experience "bicycle face" by using Instagram, social media has had its fair share of moral panic. But like the bicycle, social media has many benefits. It is often attributed as being a dangerous, toxic place that leads to teenagers experiencing depression and suicidal thoughts. If our children spend longer on social media or screens than some of our peers' children we berate ourselves and feel like terrible parents. Well, don't be so hard on yourself. Turns out family and sleep have a lot to do with teens' happiness.⁠⁠

In 2017, The Atlantic published an article by Jean Twenge called “Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation?” which made some terrifying claims and naturally went viral. Well, Jean Twenge, has now done a lot more research and has now published a more measured and accurate article refuting many of the claims she previously made. ⁠⁠

It turns out that it's not social media that's necessarily contributing to our teenager's mental health issues. "Extended quarantine has served as a groundbreaking natural experiment", she says and the results may surprise you. ⁠⁠
