According to a survey by Careerbuilder, 70% of employers scroll through social media to spy on potential employees and 54% of these employers have eliminated a candidate based on what they've seen. 😱

Here's the top reasons why they were struck off:

1. Posted provocative or inappropriate photos, videos or information (39%)
2. Posted information about drinking or using drugs (38%)
3. Made discriminatory comments related to race, gender, religion (32%)
4. Bad-mouthed previous company or fellow employee (30%)
5. Lied about qualifications (27%)
6. Had poor communication skills (27%)
7. Been linked to criminal behaviour (26%)
8. Shared confidential information from previous employers (23%)
9. Had an unprofessional screen name (22%)
10. Lied about an absence (17%) Don't panic and get rid of your social media profiles altogether though because employers also didn't like it when candidates had no social media presence - Jeez, you just can't win! 
In fact, 57 % of them said they were far less likely to call someone in if that person was an online "ghost."😩

So whether you like it or loathe it, social media is here to stay and is unavoidable. So why not make it your friend and just adjust a bit. 
Google yourself, see what comes up, make some online profiles private and look at your public ones as if you were an employer, and make sure there's a bit of meaningful content on there to read.
