What's your experience of female colleagues or managers? Are you one of the lucky ones that has a supportive environment or do you have a Queen Bee in the office? ⠀

A Queen Bee is the woman who undermines her female colleagues and feels no moral obligation to support other women. Studies have shown that this behaviour is more likely to occur in women of an older generation and is likely to have been triggered by the fact that they have faced gender discrimination in the workplace.  Negative stereotypes about women, like that they are less competent than men, can leave individual women worried that their career path may be stunted if they are primarily seen as just a woman.  This belief encourages them to distance themselves from other women colleagues so that they aren't tarred with the same "feminine" brush. ⠀

So it’s not the case that women are inherently catty. Instead, Queen Bee behaviours are more likely triggered in male dominated environments in which women are devalued. Good news though, in workplaces where there is low levels of gender discrimination and harassment, women are more likely to be supportive of one another.⠀

I've worked with one Queen Bee in my lifetime and the findings here make a lot of sense as to why she behaved that way. So if you've got a Queen Bee in your office, take a look at what she's experiencing. It might help to understand her behaviour and maybe help to turn it around.⠀
