Not looking forward to that office event or doing that presentation? We're not all blessed with situational confidence. ⠀

But there is only one way to get through it – push yourself. Swallow your fear, stand up and deliver your message. (Metaphorically speaking. If you're in a meeting, sit down!) The truth is that unless you completely fall apart no one will even know how nervous you were at the time because you acted as if you felt otherwise.⠀

This time of year, with Christmas drinks and parties around, the idea of meeting and talking to new people for those of us who aren't particularly extroverted is abhorrent. Most of us would be happier at home with a good box set. But hovering at the side of a room hoping no one will notice you is not going to improve your odds of success. Instead, force yourself to act as if you’re not terrified at the thoughts of forced conversations, put on a smile and say hello to someone. Despite being a fictional figure, the great Don Draper said "when a man walks into a room, he brings  his whole life with him. Ask him about it". We all have a story to tell. If you ask, you could learn something interesting. (Or be bored to death. There is always that danger. There's usually a few of those lingering at parties, I'm afraid!) ⠀

Don't assume everyone else in the room is completely comfortable with being there too. Many of us feel the same way about events, meetings and presentations. It won’t get easier immediately, but it will over time. You may never love the idea of engaging with new people but you can certainly learn to hate it less.⠀
