I have done this a few times and it feels so good. 
I have worked with bosses whose acts of kindness have helped me progress and learn and have led me to where I am today.  I’ve also worked with some stinkers! Haven’t we all? I guess they’re the ones who’re too scared to be kind, just in case you become better than them at the job.
