Sorry little lady but that fruit won’t help your bones. The humble prune is what you need. That wonderful dried fruit that looks like a shrivelled up testicle but tastes pretty good and does wonders for your bowel movements has now been found to hold even greater health properties.
Florida State University has discovered through their trials and research that these little golden nuggets contain bone health-promoting vitamin K, potassium, copper and boron which have the capacity to prevent and even reverse bone loss. They tested 236 women who were between one and ten years into menopause; divided them into two groups; gave one group dried plums and the other dried apple for a year. Before the trial, every 3 mnths and after the 12-month period, they gave the women bone scans and tested for bone strength, density and bone turnover markers along with other signs of bone health. And guess what? The dried plum group showed significantly greater bone mineral density, slower turnover of bone minerals and reduced bone loss than those women consuming the dried apples over that same period.(The same thing happened with another group of researchers at Oklahoma State University. They found that the dried plum diet reversed bone loss amongst ageing female mice). Dr. Bahram Arjmandi, Professor and Chair of Florida State’s Nutrition, Food, and Exercise Sciences Department who led the research said “Dried plums are the most bone-friendly fruit that I have seen in decades. They are nature’s solution to maintaining good bone health. Over my career, I have tested numerous fruits, including figs, dates, strawberries and raisins, and none of them come anywhere close to having the effect on bone density that dried plums have.” Bone health is something I’m particularly keen on at the moment so this was a great find for me. So I’m off to the dried fruit aisle. Anyone got any recipes? [media source: @the.epoch.times ] .
