With ageing comes change. And with change comes acceptance. It has to otherwise we end up fighting and resisting and making ourselves unhappy. I’m not talking about giving in or giving up or making sacrifices or compromises where we choose not to. I’m talking about accepting that as a woman of 51, the menopause is inevitable and along with that my body will go through certain changes which I have to accept and manage too; Find ways around difficulties; Pay attention to certain aspects of my life that need it; Be kind to myself.
My son is a Type 1 Diabetic and I follow a lot of diabetes groups and posts. Many of them talk about their “battle” with diabetes. My son and I chose right from the start not to see his diabetes as a fight but as something that made him who he is. Go with the flow, sort of thing. His diabetes doesn’t need to hold him back but sometimes we have to make adjustments or compromise on how to go about things because that’s just how his body works. We accepted his Type 1 and wherever he goes his annoying Type 1 ‘friend” goes along with him.

Well, I guess that’s the same for me and menopause, right now. I didn’t want to accept that I was getting older or accept the changes that would bring about with regards to myself and my life. So acceptance is where I need to be to allow those changes and the next phase of my life to begin. I can’t alter the fact that my body is going through this but I can be kind to myself and work with what my body and mind can handle.

I also need to work on acceptance when it comes to my parents and their needs, and my children and their choices (the one with diabetes wants to live abroad - that’s a whole other post!), and realise that at 51 my success rate with dealing with difficult or challenging times so far is 100%. Here’s hoping that if you’re having to accept an alternative to what you’re used to, that you’re going with the flow and it’s working for you.
