So here you are approaching the “Second Spring” of your life (as the Japanese call it) and women all around you are telling you how freeing it is to no longer have periods and how wonderful they feel with a renewed sense of self and confidence.  But what if you’re one of those women who experience acne in menopause and may feel as self conscious as you did as a teenager?⠀

The dropping levels of oestrogen and the remaining levels of what we usually consider male hormones, like testosterone, are the root cause of acne. With the level of testosterone remaining higher than the oestrogen in our body, the skin produces more sebum, an oily substance which can block and clog pores.  Et voila…. Zits, pimples, acne.  Call it what you will. We thought we were past it.⠀

So we know that keeping to a gentle, yet thorough skin cleansing routine (put down the apricot scrub!), eating as healthily as possible, keeping hydrated - these are all the usual things to try and combat it. HRT can be the solution for some, the extra oestrogen once again balancing out those depleting stocks of hormones. ⠀

But now it’s over to you.  If you’ve got a secret product or tip that has helped in some way with menopausal acne, then do please share it.⠀

The only tip I can give you is - same as in teenage years - try not to pick it. Or get a good roll neck jumper! ⠀
