i’ve been thinking a lot about communication lately. all from the same position, of the responsibilities of the one trying to get the message across. trying to be heard. you can tell it like it is, plain and simple, blunt and bold, and still have no guarantee of being understood. i’ve always assumed the responsibility was mine to communicate clearly to be understood.
but... what if the responsibility was more on the listener to receive the message? what if clear communication, was less about speaking with sincerity and honesty and clarity, and more about listening with humility, and empathy? 
our minds are so thickly tangled with emotions and assumptions and expectations, that sharing words is like passing a ball from the middle of one forest to another. i just want to consider how much easier it might be if the receiver could clear a path with empathy, putting oneself aside to be in the shoes of another. it’s just never easy.
