Hannah Oliver Depp has dedicated her career to diversifying the book industry, helping it to more effectively serve the communities of color and queerness.
With a clear aim, Hannah got to work at the end of 2018, first creating a pop-up bookstore during the holidays, and eventually expanding to two storefront locations. “We work to create an inclusive, welcoming environment and provide books and goods for the home because, well, books are home.”

Inside Loyalty’s stores, things aren’t stark. “Loyalty is stuffed,” Hannah says. “We are not minimalists…no matter our attempts we always end up filled to the brim with gorgeous gifts made by local vendors and stacks of our favorite books.”
But to Hannah, one of the most interesting things about owning an independent bookstore is the community that comes with it. “Bookstores would not exist without the support we lend each other. We are impossible creatures that should not exist; we defy all business logic. It is the truest intersection of community and business I have seen.”
For #ValentinoxBelletrist, 9 independent bookstores have joined the Maison and belletrist to celebrate literature. In Loyalty, Hannah’s windows are covered with the work of ffmirza. “Fatima’s work is a beautiful story of memory and connective tissues between family and community, memory and place, loneliness and personhood. I honestly cannot think of a more beautiful piece to memorialize this time of intense grief we are starting to see our way out of,” says Hannah.
Visit loyaltybooks, or any of the other 8 participating US-based bookstores, until April 28th to see the #ValentinoNarratives campaign and to pick up a complimentary #ValentinoxBelletrist poster and tote.
