“A Tree Grows in the Bronx.” 

That’s the name Noelle Santos would choose for a novel written about her bookstore. A somewhat clumsy question, Noelle’s answer speaks to her store’s mission. “Books and literary spaces should not be a privilege. I wanted to show that the resources we need already exist in our beautiful backyard, so I lit my life on fire to be the change.”

Noelle’s store, The Lit. Bar, is just that: a change-maker, cultural hub, and the only bookstore serving the Bronx. Since its inception two years ago, The Lit. Bar has offered to Noelle a chance to build something unexpected and meaningful, a grounds for ideas and discussions, and worlds away from the life she used to have.

“I come from a cut-throat Wall Street culture, and, once upon a time, books were my window outside of my community.” Now, her approach is markedly local. “The Lit. Bar was born out of failed protests to save the last bookstore in the Bronx.” Inspired, Noelle created a modern, open space, filled with graffiti, chandeliers, and its very own wine bar.
