“My store is about the symbiotic relationship between books and New Yorkers. I find used books with photographs, receipts, love letters, notes, train tickets. It reminds me of walking around New York, looking for one thing and finding another.”

In her new, used bookstore in Manhattan’s East Village, Leigh Altshuler observes New York as it passes through her doors. “Both the store and the City are places of discovery, curiosity and serendipity,” she says. “I have customers who are three and who are ninety three; who are local and who travel all the way here.”

Regardless of who they are, they all flock to the long, narrow shelves of Sweet Pickle to be surprised at the offering, to find a bit of history, or, if they’re hungry, pick up the store’s flagship item. “I sell books and pickles. The books are used. The pickles are new.” Jarred and branded with the store’s logo, the pickles are a symbol of the industry who occupied these streets before Leigh. “This area was once filled with vendors, slinging pickles by the pound out of barrels. Yes, actual barrels.”

It’s all part of Leigh’s own commitment to what came before her, of respecting and celebrating history and exchange. So, it was no surprise that when it came time to document her store, a simple image wouldn’t suffice. For #ValentinoNarratives, Sweet Pickle welcomed the sounds and styles of Sax star @evanjacobson17, who played his own original music in front of @lisadtaddeo’s #ValentinoNarratives campaign.

Visit Sweet Pickle in New York City to pick up your own #ValentinoNarratives poster and #ValentinoxBelletrist tote, now until April 28th.
