Rosa Duffy’s forkeepsbooks was born to fill a gap.

“I went to The New School in New York City and I was spending lots of time in the surrounding bookstores, but I always noticed the lack of black material.”

So, Rosa collected. Works by Pat Parker, Gwendolyn Brooks and Adrian Piper soon filled her 8th street apartment. Then she moved, back to Atlanta, and her books came with. Eventually, she opened up For Keeps on Auburn Avenue, a street that’s home to a number of historic black spaces: the old residence of Martin Luther King Jr., the Apex Museum and Big Bethel Church, to name a few.

For Rosa, For Keeps is about access. Both a bookstore and a reading room, customers come to sit, learn and soak in rare black books without the pressure to purchase. “We are creating a community that feels free to learn and speak on their existence in a space that allows it without judgment or fear.” In order to cultivate such an exchange, Rosa has worked for over a decade collecting rare books. “I know my stuff and have things that are really difficult to get. It’s hard to stand up and say it sometimes, but the collection is very impressive.” And, it’s for everyone. “It doesn’t matter who you are, if you have a library card or if you went to a University with an incredible black archive, this stuff is for you and you can touch it!”

For #ValentinoArchives, For Keeps is hosting Janet Mock’s text in their front windows. Visit the store in Atlanta, Georgia, to shop rare books from black authors and to pick up a free poster and tote from #ValentinoxBelletrist, from now until April 28th.
