At the historic corner of Elysian Fields and Saint Claude Avenue in New Orleans sits a tall building with a modern, freshly-painted facade. It’s a bookstore, but it doesn’t look like its contemporaries. It’s sleek and markedly monochrome, and, for its owner, DJ Johnson, part of the neighborhood he grew up in. “I walked this same block as a child, and I always wanted to create a space of influence. So I envisioned and started to build.”

Just like that, Baldwin & Co. was born. Filled with books on history, business, art and travel, DJ sees it not only as a space to pick up a new novel, but also as a center of local exchange, where people can connect with others, and the community feels at home. “I want to add to the culture of my neighborhood, and I want to give back to the community that has given so much.” 

At Baldwin & Co., as the sun set in New Orleans earlier this week, DJ welcomed his friends from the local @kinfolkbrassband2021. Together, as they marched and played in and out of the store, they celebrated the new #ValentinoNarratives campaign.
