Montessori materials. They're beautiful and children are drawn to them. Montessori math materials help children develop a concrete understanding of mathmatical concepts before they are introduced to abstract symbols. Here a primary student is working with the bead hanger. This material helps students begin to associate the quantity of beads with a number symbol. It is self- correcting in that the bead chains become longer as you move to the right, so an error is obvious. Students are able to work independently in this manner.
