Link in Bio. 🤓 🌿 What are alkaloids in MJ? These lesser known compounds may have a big impact.

What does ganja, coca leaf, and coffee have in common? They all contain alkaloids, a powerful group of medicinal, nitrogen-containing compounds found across the plant kingdom. In fact, they are “one of the most common groups of chemicals that [have] medicinal properties found in plants.” Popular alks include “m0rphine, c0caine, nicotine, caffeine, quinine, ephedrine, and many more.”

Before diving in, it's important to understand that can*abis is a chemically complicated plant. Wildly complicated. To give you an idea, “more than 500 compounds have been reported from C. sativa, of which 125 cannabinoids have been isolated and/or identified." Non-cannabinoid constituents include phenolics, flavonoids, terpenes, and, of course - alkaloids. These contribute to the so-called 'entourage effect.'

How and when were alkaloids discovered in our favorite plant? What role do they play? How many are there? What medicinal benefits (and potential benefits) do they hold? What part of the MJ plant contains the most alkaloids?
