Title of Art Piece: "There was a quiet stillness; her cradle unfilled; unable to move on."

Materials: Blown glass, found objects and dust.

SJSU: What are you trying to convey through your art piece?
_
Cassandra Straubing: I often times leave my work open to interpretation, and I leave a little bit said through the title, and people are allowed to bring their own connotations to it, their own stories to it…I also incorporate political statements. This blown glass is actually annealed glass. It's meant to break, it's meant to be fragile, it's meant to demonstrate memory. I often deal with statistics and in this specific piece, I deal with the statistic of one in five births end in miscarriage, and also one in four women are raped by the age of 25. So, between both of those statistics it tends to evoke a lot of memory among people, but also it educates the public about how common these two statistics are.

SJSU: How important do you feel it is as an educator to be active in a broader art community and art industry at large?
_
CS: I think that being involved in the outside community of art, as being president of the International Glass Arts Society and also showing locally and nationally in places like the ICA in San Jose and Bullseye Gallery up in Portland--demonstrates to the students what it actually takes to be an artist. They're able to watch me make alongside them and watch me learn how to apply for shows, or learn about organizing conferences. Networking, I think, is another big part of it. So, they're able to see what it takes to be an artist and be inspired alongside of me being inspired by them.
