SJSU: What is your newest film "Disaffected Youth" about?
_

Patrick Mattes: "Disaffected Youth" is a punk rock coming of age story about a teenage boy who idolizes his older brother and the absence of his parents. The older brother seems like the perfect role model until he falls off the deep end in to heavy drug addiction. It’s all about how the little brother deals with his older brother's fall out.

SJSU: How did your experience and courses at San Jose State help you with your filmmaking career?
_
PM: All of the courses were really helpful in learning the foundations of filmmaking and getting me started in the film industry itself. But a big thing that helped me at San José State were all the networks and connections that I made with fellow students and teachers. The film clubs were really helpful as well.
_
SJSU: How did you get involved with filmmaking and Cinequest?
_
PM: I feel like the whole studies, film school and incubation system helped me grow as a filmmaker and gave me a safe place to experiment, [as well as] try out a bunch of things with filmmaking...I think that was definitely instrumental along with some of the teachers that were there...Barnaby Dallas, Harry Mathias, William (Fred) Guess, Nick Martinez. Spartan Film Studios was a huge help and the Film Production Society also helped out a lot...It was really a pleasant experience.

You can still catch 'Disaffected Youth' and other college shorts on Friday, March 10, 7:15 p.m. and Saturday, March 11, 12:45 p.m. at the Cinemark Century 20 theater complex, 825 Middlefield Road, Redwood City.
