"May’s full moon is known as the Flower Moon, given the name to honor the changing seasons and the multitude of different flowers that bloom in May, including the flowers that bloom on the tops of the iconic Arizona saguaro cactus. This month’s full moon is setting here behind Black Mountain, Carefree, Arizona, and the saguaros that grow on its slopes. The saguaro cactus bloom is the Arizona State Flower and can be seen on top of the saguaros and its many arms mainly in the month of May. The saguaro cactus is found only in the Sonoran desert and is a very slow-growing cactus—many reach well over 150 years of age and it takes anywhere from 60-75 years to develop an arm." 📸 + text by Richard J.
