BREAKING: Our SeattleKraken signed defenseman Ville Ottavainen to a two-way, three-year contract ($775,000 AAV). We could see him next year with the CV Firebirds.

Ottavainen has spent the 2022-23 season playing for JYP of Liiga, which is the top men’s professional league in Finland. He totaled 16 points (five goals, 11 assists) in 54 regular-season games, setting career highs in both goals and assists. Ottavainen ranked third among his team’s defensemen in scoring, and his five goals and 11 assists tied for second and ranked third, respectively, among JYP blueliners despite ranking fifth among those players in time on ice per game (15:44).

The six-foot-five, 210-pound blueliner has 33 points (12 goals, 21 assists) in 130 games with JYP at the Liiga level, while also spending time with the organization’s U20 and U18 teams. He totaled 16 points (eight goals, eight assists) in 16 games at the U20 level and 35 points (10 goals, 25 assists) in 51 games at the U18 level, earning U18 SM-sarja First-Team All-Star honors in 2018-19. Ottavainen also played one season for the Kitchener Rangers in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) where he recorded 15 points (four goals, 11 assists) in 53 regular-season games.
