Continuing on our journey of exploring next generation reactors, today we will be looking at the BWRX-300 SMR from GE Hitachi.

The BWRX-300 is a 300MW compact, boiling water reactor. This design features a simplified configuration that results in less concrete and steel needed for construction. It relies on natural circulation for cooling which can prevent fuel from melting for over 7 days without operator action. It aims to simplify existing nuclear technology to reduce capital costs per megawatt versus typical small modular reactors, making it a promising option for affordably converting coal plants. Not only can these be deployed for electricity generation, they can aid with industrial applications, including hydrogen production, desalination, and district heating. It has a 60 year lifespan and modular construction aims for 24-36 month deployments globally by 2029. The first four of these will be built in Canada at the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station east of Toronto.
