Wattage Wednesday: Let’s generate some good vibes with more reactor restarts!

The Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant is located in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan and operated by Tohoku Electric Power Company. It originally had three reactors that began operating in 1984, 1995, and 2005 respectively. The plant was closest to the epicenter of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, but because of its higher seawall (15 meters vs. Fukushima’s Daiichi’s 5.7), there was minimal flooding and the reactors were fine. The nearby town of Onagawa, however, was largely destroyed. Thankfully, about  300 residents were able to evacuate to the nuclear plant to ride out the tsunami. Despite the IAEA determining the plant was undamaged, the three units there have been in cold shutdown ever since.

After (arguably unnecessary) safety upgrades, it seems that reactors 2 and 3 at Onagawa will be cleared to restart operations, beginning early in 2024.  Unit 1 was deemed too expensive to upgrade, unfortunately.  Nonetheless, adding back 1650 MW of rock solid clean power, that has already proven it can handle the worst of the worst, will be a great thing for Japan, and the planet.
