Today is #worldprematurityday and it's a well celebrated day in my house. You see, we have what is called a #superpreemie. He was due to arrive on July 4th but instead my water broke on April 1st when I was only at 26 weeks pregnant. I was flown to lucilepackardfoundation (where the most beautiful angles work) to be on bed rest and keep the baby "cooking". We were not ready for that. We hadn't even taken our parenting classes and were moving, it was the busiest year for the company and I had lots of weddings between then and when the baby was supposed to come. It was so scary, when you googled "premature baby" there was information on how they die but not a lot on how they lived. I spent three weeks in the hospital on bedrest and was monited 24/7.
Friends, family and clients sent me flowers, books, pretty things and did their best to cheer me up. I was scared, angry, restless, stressed and exhausted. I still tear up thinking about how terrible that time was. Then comes the #supertrout at less than 3lbs. He looked like a little alien, I imagine he was in terrible pain from not be fully developed, he was growing fast and even on the day of my baby shower had to have a blood transfusion. I couldn't hold him for the first five days of his life and he spent the first nine weeks of that in the #NICU mostly hooked up to feeding tubes and IVs. The first year was so rough. He had colic and hardly slept, we had countless doctor appointments and physical therapy. The stress was mindblowing but we had a baby and we just hoped everything would be ok.
And it was ok. And it is even better than ok. And I cannot tell you how grateful we are each day for our beautiful blessing of this kid and the wonderful Nurses and Doctors that saved him (and me).
So the moral to my story is, trust in the process of whatever it is you are going through, however hard it is. Lean on the people who love you, let them take care of you. Do you best to stay stress free, stay as positive as you can, try to laugh (even when you want to cry) and know that amazing beauty can come from the darkest times.
For every new event KPE books in 2022/2023 KPE will be donating a % to the marchofdimes
