Another insect that sometimes gets misidentified, the Crane Fly!

🔎 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝗙𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀?
These delicate insects may resemble large mosquitoes, but they are harmless and have their unique characteristics. They are commonly found in grassy areas, gardens, and near bodies of water. Their long, slender bodies and elongated legs give them a distinct appearance.

💦 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗲𝗮𝘁?
The adult crane flies primarily feed on nectar and other plant fluids. They have long proboscises that they use to suck up the sweet juices of flowers. By doing so, they also contribute to pollination.

🔍 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲
The larvae of crane flies, often called "leatherjackets," live in damp soil or aquatic environments. They play an important ecological role as decomposers, breaking down dead organic matter. Their presence in your garden or yard indicates a healthy ecosystem!

Rose thorn for scale.
