Only 1 out of 4 sunscreens was found to be effective without "worrisome" chemicals, according to a new report from the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

The study called out the ingredient #oxybenzone, which absorbs into the bloodstream and can act as a hormone disruptor. The chemical is also linked to lower testosterone levels in adolescent boys, thyroid hormones, kidney function and puberty timing.

While oxybenzone has come under scrutiny for potential side effects in animal models, it doesn't reflect the same risks in human data. Dr. Christina Lee Chung says you "would have to apply oxybenzone to your skin for 300 years straight to get your blood levels to the concentration shown in lab studies to have the harmful effects” produced in the lab.

She adds that nobody should obsess over which #sunscreen they use, and recommends to "try a bunch and use what you like — liberally.”
