General Manager Interview Guide (by @__jnice__):

Martin Mayhew has plenty of experience in high level positions at the NFL level, which is something Ron Rivera is looking for (& they also share the same agent). Quick note before we go through the rest of this information: I didn’t include the 2016 Giants as part of the research because he held the title of Director of Football Ops. This type of position usually does not work with roster moves/scouting & focuses more on operations that help a team run behind the scenes. I wouldn’t be surprised if he had input on football decisions in this role due to his past experiences though.

Now skipping to the draft picks. This is a compile of good & bad picks. This does NOT mean he alone decided to draft each of these players. A lot of people come together to make a draft happen & decide who is selected. Looking back at previous drafts & team structures a person has been a part of can help us understand what type of systems he has been in & what he could potentially bring & look for here. Being with these different front office styles helps a person learn from those specific experiences & form their own management style/evaluation process from that. As the GM with the Lions from 2008 to 2015, Mayhew has drafted 2 players that have been named to the All-Pro team (one of them making it 3 times) & 9 players that have been selected to the Pro Bowl at least once. Besides Calvin Johnson, the 2005-2007 Lions draft classes, which took place while Mayhew was the Assistant GM, were very disappointing.

He has a pretty good track record in free agency. While he didn’t bring in too many big name players (some of that may have been due to the difficulty of trying recruit players to the Lions because, well, the Lions are the Lions), Mayhew did hit on a lot of his under-the-radar or bounce back players that contributed to the team.

Mayhew competed 28 trades during his 8 years as General Manager for the Lions. He’s not afraid of “big trades” & trading within his own division.

Most notably, he has ties to two QBs who could be on the move this offseason in Jimmy Garoppolo & Matthew Stafford.
