Breaking down Marty Hurney’s experience in the NFL (by @__jnice__):

Hurney has a ton of experience in the NFL & most of his NFL career was spent with the Panthers.

Let’s remember, there are a lot of people who come together to make a draft class come together..not just one person. I think Hurney drafts better than what people are giving him credit for. It’s not the best by any means, but he has added players that fill roles. Obviously he has his busts, every GM does. The areas I noticed where he struggled at drafting were RBs & QBs. He has selected 3 running backs in the 1st round during his career (I am personally not a fan of that), however, only 1 of them has live up to expectations. Beyond the 1st round, the picks have been bad at RB & many of them where out of the league pretty quickly. The same thing goes for quarterback. Besides Cam Newton at #1 overall, Hurney’s picks at QB have not turned out to be great. The positions I thought Hurney has drafted well at have been DL, DB & OL. He has drafted 10 First-Team All-Pro players (17 All-Pro teams combined) & 14 Pro Bowl players (41 Pro Bowls combined).

I think it’s clear that free agency was a struggle for the Panthers during Hurney’s time there. They didn’t sign many players from other teams to big contracts, & when they did, they often missed. They targeted players on smaller deals (similar to how Washington in 2020), but you have to hit on those players if you aren’t going to spend the big bucks. Hurney found a few players that made an impact in a big way & found some who played in decently large roles. He had his fair share of misses as well though. Hurney seems to do a good job at re-signing the players they have drafted & who are preforming well though.

The Panthers didn’t really make any block buster trades with Hurney as GM. They stuck to trading draft picks & a few deals for players. Even though there aren’t many splash trades, I would say Hurney does a really good a getting value out of what he is trading away, especially 2011 and after. The two defensive tackles he traded for in 2009 were really bad trades, but the rest of the moves he made, worked out pretty well.
