Dustin Hopkins has been an up-and-down player during his tenure in DC. Being the starting kicker since Week 2 of 2015, he’s become a familiar face. Hopkins is coming off his worst career year however, kicking sub-80% in FGs and battling a hamstring injury throughout the year. It’s seems like a popular decision amongst fans for what to do here, but it might not be that simple. Here’s what we’d do:

Jess:
It’s easy to trash on Hopkins, I get it. It felt like on multiple occasions during the year the offense would muster a drive downfield, only for Hopkins to miss an early FG. That overlooked the fact that Hopkins made kicks when it counted. A lot of people can underrated how hard it can be to find a good or even average kicker . Hopkins did not have a good year, but that could work to the team’s advantage here. Ron Rivera stuck by him throughout the season and clearly likes what he’s got. It won’t break the bank for Washington. I’m bringing Hop back.

Verdict:
Stay—3yr/7.5m, 3m GTD

Justin:
Washington fans have super high expectations for Hopkins, and I think it’s a bit unfair. I get that Hopkins has missed some kicks, but every kicker does. I know I will be ridiculed for this opinion, but I think Hopkins is a very solid kicker, which is tough to find in the NFL right now. Hopkins has been consistent during his time in D.C. Hopkins missed 7 field goals this past season and 6 of those were from 40+ yards. The 2020 season was Hopkins worst season since entering the league, and I wouldn’t say he had a bad season. He finished with a 79.4 field goal percentage with a long of 51 yards. He had his best season in terms of kickoff touchbacks though earning 65 touchbacks with a 83.3 percentage.

Verdict:
Stay—3yr/8.25m, 1.5m GTD
