The prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said:
"انما الاعمال بالخواتيم" "Indeed actions are only judged according to their sealing state"
I.e. death
A story was once narrated regarding a man who had murdered 99 people. After feeling intense regret for his actions, he went to seek advice regarding his actions towards a priest. When he asked what he could do to amend his actions, the priest replied that the only way to amend his actions were to suffer the punishment after he died. Of course, this answer didn't satisfy the man, so he killed the priest and decided to ask an imam instead. Once he'd explained the situation, the imam advised him to move to another town. Upon his journey, the man passed away. The angel of jannah and jahannam, both descended. The first angel argued that the man was on his way to seek forgiveness, however the other angel argued that the man hadn't sought forgiveness yet, therefore was still a sinner.
Allah then sent down a third angel who  requested them both to measure the distance from the old village to the place of death and the place of death to the new town, and whichever he was closer to, would determine his place in heaven or hell. Some narrators have mentioned that Allah actually changed the dimensions of the earth, so he would be closer to the new town, and so, he went to jannah.
