#repost Caption : yassmin_a "Since December, people have been on the streets demanding the fall of the President, Omar al-Bashir. In power for 30 years, Bashir is wanted for crimes by the ICC, and has driven a kind and prosperous country into the ground. Sudan’s troubles have been felt most keenly - as always - by the people, and they’ve had enough. They have had *enough*. Since April 6th, there’s been a sit-in a la Tahrir Square, in front the military HQ in Khartoum. 15 people have been murdered since - one of those my cousin, Maab Hanafi. The human cost of revolution is steep. I am still learning how to hold the grief, figuring out how to cradle death and live life at the same time.

There are such mixed feelings, being Sudanese but so far from the action. I wish I could be there, to be a part of it all, but I also know that it is not necessarily my place. It’s humbling, to think about not what I want to do, but what I am best placed to. Is it being outside the country, raising awareness? Is it in the melee, risking my life alongside my people? What right do I have, as someone who was born there but brought up in the West, to the struggle? How much of this thought process is centering myself and not the struggle? How do I support this revolution in the most ethical, effective manner possible? When Bashir falls, as I believe he must, what happens next?

I don’t have the answers. All I have is radical hope, and a belief in the strength of the Sudanese people.The image you see has now taken on cult status in the fight - representative of what we Sudanese call a ‘Kandaka’ - a Sudanese Queen, harkening back to our ancient kingdom of Kush. #موكب7ابريل #تسقط_بس #مدن_السودان_تنتفض #موكب6ابريل #sudanrevolts."
