Meet Cal Etcheverry, our fourth #USCInfluencer. Cal is a freshman studying film and television production in the School of Cinematic Arts. Check out his work on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/studioscalantis .
.
What: Calantis Studios - Cal and Jack’s (his business partner) film production company.
.
.
Favorite part of film: “I’ve [always] loved storytelling and getting in the perspective of another person… I started off when I was a little kid writing books and poetry,” he said. “Film is the best way to portray a story to an audience and the most effective way to encapsulate the story.”
.
.
Writing process: “I just write it as I think of it. There’s not really a structure to writing I do per say but just when it comes to mind—the dialogue and then the visuals. It’s all playing in my head and I just have to translate it on paper in words, that’s the hardest part.”
.
.
Film he’s most proud of: “Art of War, my most recent film…. I think it turned out really well with the mix of sound design and effects on the scene. They culminate to make a really cool, authentic war film that was also really emotionally inspiring too.”
.
.
Filming style: “I really don’t spend more than like $150 on each film honestly. It’s very guerilla style.”
.
.
Biggest lesson: “Everything contributes to the story in some form or fashion. You may not notice it all the time, but the director is consciously making the decision to put that in for that specific reason for the story ultimately. And it’s all about the story—that’s what I learned.”
.
.
Recognition: Cal’s been to festivals and received awards in Dallas, Austin, and New York. .
.
Advice for aspiring filmmakers: “If you have film ideas, go for it. Shoot it on the weekends just casually, even if it doesn’t count for anything, just shoot it for fun. Make as many films as possible and rack up a list of films you have and do it in a guerrilla style. Don’t spend too much money on it—you can make a great film without having to spend a dime, and it can be super impactful.”
