Meet Lizzie Smith, an Early Childhood Development graduate and a future Child Life Specialist. ⭐

This summer Lizzie is completing her final internship at Wolfson Children's Hospital with certified Child Life Specialist, Mary Lauren Upchurch, under the guidance of Dr. Katrina Hall, the UNF Intern Coordinator for the Child Life Program.

Child Life Specialists play a vital role in pediatric healthcare, helping children and families cope with illness and hospitalization. Through their training in child development, they use play to help children express their anxieties related to treatment, illness, procedures, or hospital stays.

The collaboration between the Early Childhood program and the Psychology department has paved the way for students like Lizzie to pursue their passion for helping young patients.

The Psychology department offered one of the 10 required courses this summer, DEP 4482 Death and Dying and is offering a new course this fall, PSY4935 Intro to Child Life. The course topics include family-centered care, therapeutic play, preparation, impact of illness, scope of practice, and the official documents of the Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP).

The EC program will also offer EEC4260 Teaching the Whole Child in the spring. This course, also required for the child life specialist concentration, includes a unit on play and play therapy. Dr. Adrien Malek-Lasater will be teaching this course.

For more information on the Child Life Specialist concentration, contact Dr. Hall at Khall@unf.edu.
