This Breguet et Fils No 1950 clockwatch belongs to a rare group of decorative and complicated watches made by legendary Swiss-born, Paris-based Abraham-Louis Breguet for the powerful Ottoman Empire, at a time when the Napoleonic Wars raging across Europe had considerably reduced the scope of his trade. The watch was completed on 31 December 1807 and sold to Galip Effendi, the Ottoman Empire’s ambassador to France, for 4,000 French Francs – one of Breguet’s most expensive watches at the time.

Breguet’s No 1950 is a horological masterpiece: a highly complicated 22K gold and enamel ‘Cabriolet’ pair case watch featuring a Grande Complication with Petite and Grande sonnerie and independent minute repeating, with striking and repeating of the hours and minutes with five hammers on five gongs. The movement is built from a 1796 technical drawing by Breguet from which he only realised six watches. Of the six made, No 1950 is the only one with the striking and repeating mechanism constructed with five hammers and five gongs.

Offered in ‘Centuries of Time: A Private Collection’, a stunning collection of rare pocket watches assembled over the course of 45 years, including a diverse array of pieces spanning from the 16th to the 20th centuries.
