The People's Princess

Global Chairwoman Cheyenne Westphal explores Andy Warhol's 1982 work, ‘Portrait of Princess Diana.’

Executed in 1982, following the wedding of Diana to Prince Charles the year before, Warhol borrowed his source image from Lord Snowdon’s widely circulated official engagement photograph. In his characteristic style, Warhol cut and cropped the original image in the same way that he had approached press images of Marilyn Monroe and Jackie Kennedy in his defining Pop portraits of American celebrity in the 1960s.
