## Caption

Perfecting the perpétuelle – or self-winding watch – was key to Abraham Louis Breguet’s early fame: he is thought to have sold his first example to the Duc d’Orléans in 1780. His writings from that time also confirm that Queen Marie-Antoinette owned a perpétuelle. 
Breguet’s ingenious solution incorporated two mainsprings, wound together by a heavy platinum weight pivoted at the edge of the movement. 
Lot 28 in Part III of our Masterworks of Time sale is this extraordinarily rare gold self-winding quarter repeating watch with moon phases, day of the week and power reserve, sold in 1796.
