Originally inspired by Sir Edmund Percival Hillary and Tenzing Norgay’s historic summit of Mount Everest in 1953, Rolex’s ‘Explorer’ line had to look good, yet also perform under extreme conditions. Rolex consequently continued to improve the collection over the years, and introduced the Rolex Explorer 1016 in 1963 – featuring a water resistance rating of 100 meters, exceptional dial legibility, and lume coated Mercedes-style hands.
